Would-Be Superman Above the Water Tub

by Jan Keteleer

I painted this boy at the exact second before everything changes. He stands barefoot on the warm edge of a terracotta roof, toes curled over the gutter, red cape hanging still in the late summer air. Below him waits a small white tub, filled by a green garden hose, looking far too small for the leap he imagines. That gap between dream and ground is what moved me. I built the scene from above, so you share his dizzying view and feel the height in your own stomach. The golden-hour light pours over his shoulders and catches the water's surface, as if the sun itself is holding its breath. I chose warm reds and earthy browns for the tiles, bright primary blue and red for his costume, and soft greens for the garden that seems to hold him. Thick impasto strokes, layered paint you can almost touch, give the roof its roughness and the moment its weight. His loose fists speak of courage and doubt in equal measure. I recognize that feeling. We all once stood on some edge, believing we could fly. This painting invites you to remember yours, and to honor the child still waiting inside us all.
