The Zaanse Schans is a neighbourhood with historic wooden buildings in the municipality of Zaanstad. It lies on the Zaan, opposite the village of Zaandijk and next to the Juliana Bridge.
It is a well-known tourist destination with hundreds of thousands of visitors every year: in 2016 there were 1.8 million, in 2017, 2.2 million. It has been set up with the intention of preserving the historical heritage, but it is not an enclosed open-air museum. The houses are inhabited, so not only tourists come to the grounds.
