When the Zwartendijk was built is not certain.
Around 1300 the sea tides started to rise. The city tried to secure itself against this new threat by connecting both ends of the IJssel dike. The St. Nicolaasdijk was extended with the Zanddijk, and with an arc extended as Zwartendijk to the border of Kampen and Oene. The connection to the southern part of the IJsseldijk was established via the Wilgenweg.
The dyed-in part of Broeken and Maten belonged to the area of the city of Kampen. Beyond that were the independent communities of Oene and Kamperveen.
