About the artwork

This rich view of the heavenly world is the result of merging the two canvases of the same name: Rubens James I apotheosis.

Carlos I Estuardo - looking to elevate the figure of his father Jacobo I - commissioned him to decorate the ceilings of the beautiful reception room of the Whitehall Palace, now Banqueting Hall.

The lines of the iconographic programme would be drawn by the architect Iñigo Jones (1573-1652) and Rubens himself, who was inspired by the Veronese and the Tintoretto for the perspective of sotto in sù [from bottom to top], intended for a scene in a roof.

Back in Antwerp to finish the real work, he followed the line of sketching and these preparatory works arrived in Spain.

The gimmicky stroke oil found in the horn of plenty the sublimation of the human experience. The flying angels, putti, in complex abbreviations, carry fullness in abundance.

Peter Paul Rubens (Siegen, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, 28 June 1577 - Antwerp, Brabant, Spanish Netherlands, 30 May 1640) was a South Dutch painter of Flemish Baroque. He was also called Pieter Paul, Pieter Pauwel or Petrus Paulus.
