Geologically Ameland is a fairly young Wadden. Over the past 7000 years the whole Wadden Sea area has always been dynamic; tidal channels have regularly shifted, also the limits of the tidal and salt marshes and the Wadden locations moved regularly. The shallow subsurface of Ameland consists largely of a sandy shoreline, formed on the North Sea side of the Wadden Sea. On this shoreline dunes are blown up from the beach, salt marshes were formed on the south side.
