hollyhocks in front of an old stone wall. The hollyhock (Alcea rosea, synonym: Althaea rosea) is a biennial plant from the cheese herb family (Malvaceae). Folk names are bald rose, elder, peasant rose and hemp, although the latter name is misleading, because hemp is the official name of another plant in the cheese herb family.
