The Alps are a mountain range in Europe, stretching from the French Mediterranean coast in the southwest to the Pannonian plain in the east. The area of the mountain range is more than 200,000 km². The Alps spread over eight states: Austria (29%), Italy (27%), France (21%), Switzerland (13%), Germany (5.8%), Slovenia (3.5%), Liechtenstein (0.08%) and Monaco (0.001%). It can be argued that Hungary also belongs here, since the Ödenburg Mountains located on its border are counted as part of the Alps. In total, close to 13 million people live throughout the Alps.
