Havana is the vibrant capital of Cuba. The city is home to many old buildings and monuments. Havana is divided into three districts: Habana Vieja (Old Havana), Centro Habana and Vedado. Habana Vieja is the oldest district, full of historical sights. It seems as if time has stood still. Centro Habana is a district with buildings from different times in different architectural styles. The construction of the district began around 1890, but it was not until 1940 that it was completed. The French city architect Forestier, who designed a large part of the district, finished the district. The third district is Vedado. Vedado means 'forbidden'; the district was given this name because it was not allowed to be built on this site in the 16th century. It is the most important district with wide avenues, large houses and lots of light. Most of the political buildings are there and there are many shops, cinemas and offices, but it also looks like an old quarter because of the old houses with large gardens.
