peregrine falcon with prey
The peregrine falcon is a large falcon with an average size of 43 cm and has a light underside with cross bands and a dark gray back. There is a broad, black beard stripe. In the subspecies F. peregrinus peregrinus the back is dark grey and the underparts are cream coloured with dark spots, cheeks are white and the dark beard stripe (typical of all falcons) is clearly visible. The legs are yellow, the bill blue-black and already curved from the base of the bill. The juveniles are brown before they take on the colours of the adults. Several slight variations can occur in the 19 different subspecies. As with most birds of prey, the female is significantly larger and heavier than the male, this can be up to 30%.
