The roofs of Heusden Vesting form a special sight in the Dutch fortified landscape. From a higher point - for example, the rampart - it is easy to see how the red tiled roofs stretch across the old town like a patchwork quilt. Each roof tells a piece of history. Most roofs in the fortress are covered with traditional red Dutch roof tiles. These roof tiles used to be baked by hand from clay from the region. Many buildings have so-called mansard or gabled roofs, matching the architectural style of the 17th and 18th centuries. The roofs are often asymmetrical, with dormers or small lifting beams, reminding us of the city's trading past.
