Zeeland Girl is a margarine brand owned by Unilever. The brand dates back to 1894. The mascot associated with the brand was a young woman in Zeeland costume.
Zeeland Girl was known for the advertising slogans "Ons ben zuunig" and "not a penny too much". A girl in Zeeland costume uttered these winged words, symbolising the proverbial thrifty Zeeland people. The brand enjoyed great fame among the Dutch public but was eventually no longer bought by the same public. As a result, Unilever announced its withdrawal from the market in 2000. Former Queen's Commissioner of Zeeland Wim van Gelder (1992-2007) said at the time he was happy with the disappearance of the cheap margarine brand because, in his opinion, it evoked an undesirable association of a cheap, second-rate product with the province of Zeeland. Unilever later reversed its decision to withdraw Zeeland Girl from the market. It did, however, move production to Hungary and Poland.[1]
