'shark.' is the first work in the @_favanimals series and is my own favourite animal. I have a special connection with it. Fear and fascination are close to each other.
'shark.' is a much talked about and much described hunter from the blue deep.
'shark.' provides balance in the seas, changes its blade set regularly and has thick skin.
'shark.' smells blood from miles away, but also falls prey to dolphins, orcas and humans itself.
Created in 2012 in an attic room in Amsterdam on Stadhouderskade, where I lived above two artists. A work from the early days of my more alternative lifestyle.
The works in the series are created on an Apple iPad2 and I use the application paper53. I use only my fingers. Each work starts with a free sketch. I draw thick black lines over the parts of the sketch I am happy with. I highlight those with more black, creating a solid outline. Then I clean up the work and style the design.
Using Polynesian surf culture as inspiration, the animals remind you of modern hieroglyphs. My own favourite colours, red and blue, guide and refer to my Dutch origins.
