Dwarf birches (Betula nana) are part of the sparse flora in Iceland. These birches, also known as bog birches or polar birches, often only reach bush size in Iceland due to environmental conditions. The photo was taken in April and shows the branched twigs and branches of the dwarf birch trees before the green leaves have grown. The photo looks unusual and shows a quite natural confusion.
