Did you know that the sunflower originally comes from North and Central America? Thousands of years ago, it was used by indigenous peoples as food (the seeds), for oil and as an ornamental flower. It was not until the 16th century that the sunflower made its radiant debut in Europe, where it quickly became popular. Since then, it has been featured not only in gardens but also in world-famous works of art such as the paintings of Vincent van Gogh.
Characteristics of the sunflower? The sunflower is more than just a yellow flower.
Height → Depending on the variety, they range from a modest 40 cm to giants of up to 3 metres. Flower structure → What looks like a single flower actually consists of hundreds of tiny florets in the centre, surrounded by yellow ray florets. Heliotropism → Young sunflowers follow the sun from east to west. Mature sunflowers, however, no longer turn with the sun, but usually face permanently towards the east. The meaning of the sunflower Sunflowers are seen worldwide as a symbol of positivity and vitality. Their ever-radiant face turned towards the sun represents optimism, loyalty and admiration. In many cultures, sunflowers are given as gifts to wish someone happiness and warmth. They are also popular at weddings and celebrations, as they symbolise love, happiness and a bright future. No wonder the sunflower always makes a lasting impression in bouquets.
