During a ringing session of terns, we were attacked by an angry mob of birds. Arctic terns and common terns are known to attack anyone who ventures too close to their nests. If that doesn't take effect quickly enough, they empty their stomachs by shitting all over you. Their screams still ring in my ears when I think about it. Other birds also mingled in this protest as they too had their nests on the ground further along. The beautiful weather shows that it was a special moment. The species is not short of sunlight as they are true sun worshippers. When winter returns to the north, they sometimes fly thousands of kilometres south to spend the winter at the South Pole. They then enjoy the southern summer where the sun does not set. Yet the birds are also vulnerable because most places in the Netherlands are not safe enough for them to breed.
