A train ( English : train ) is a form of rail transport consisting of a series of vehicles pulled along a railway track to transport cargo or passengers. Propulsion is provided by separate locomotives or individual motors in multiple units. Although steam engines historically dominated propulsion, the most common modern forms are diesel and electric locomotives, provided by overhead cables or additional rails. Other energy sources include horses, ropes or wires, gravity, pneumatics, batteries, and gas turbines. Railways typically consist of two, three or four rails, with a number of monorails and maglev guideways in the mix. The etymology of the word "train" comes from Old French trahiner , from Latin trahere 'pull, pull'. [1]
