Nancy's fully renovated home

This week, we're taking a look at Nancy's colourful Scandinavian home in Haarlem, the Netherlands. She lives with her boyfriend Kevin and their Siberian tomcat in a fully renovated workers’ house built in 1898 with (by Haarlem standards) a spacious garden.

Best of both worlds

You might know Nancy from her Instagram account @_nancyfaber, or as the co-founder of The Home Style Club. Nancy: "Being a full-time entrepreneur and working in interior design is the best of both worlds for me." From a young age, she had already discovered her love for both, but it wasn't until she had been working in online marketing for ten years that she finally found her way into her dream job. "Every day, I walk or cycle through beautiful Haarlem to our office," she explains with a smile on her face.

Renovating the house

Nancy explains: "What attracted me to the house right away was the potential it had. We've completely renovated it. We've moved the kitchen from the back to the front of the house. Since it has such a spacious garden, we were able to significantly extend the small living room, meaning it now has over 50m2 of space. In addition, we tackled the garden by adding slatted fencing and a canopy." Even though Nancy would probably do it differently now, she loved harnessing all the potential the house had to offer.

A happy dance for second-hand designer pieces

"In a nutshell, my interior design style is colourful and Scandinavian, preferably combined with designer pieces. Designer pieces make my heart race. If I see something beautiful that I can't afford, I make it myself or I hunt for it on eBay or at sample sales. I've found a lot of the designer items in our home that way," she explains. Nancy does a happy dance every time she finds a second-hand designer piece in mint condition for a bargain price. Second-hand designer pieces are great value, allowing you to keep making changes to your home without constantly reinvesting.

"My boyfriend Kevin is a filter for everything that comes into the house. I find lots of beautiful stuff and I'd love to keep adding and changing things, but nothing gets through without his approval. And that's probably a good thing!"

Timeless, abstract pieces that you can’t stop looking at

A while back, when Nancy was visiting her sister's house, she couldn't keep her eyes off the art on her walls. She had these timeless, mostly abstract pieces that you can't help looking at and that, even now years later, still don't look out of place. That's how Nancy developed her love for the shapes, lines and colours of abstract art. "So, it's not really surprising that the beautiful piece "angle" by Michael Schulz-Dostal caught my eye," explains Nancy. "I think that art should move you and which piece does that is a really personal thing". The playful, minimalist lines and fresh colours mean that this is a piece that makes Nancy happy every day!
