Three questions with Leo Schindzielorz
All about his passion for photography
No, it's not Photoshop; Jacco Hinke's pieces are actually painted that way. Amazing! Inspired by old masters, like Jan Davidsz. de Heem, Jacco has made it his mission to modernise the old masters with a fun twist.
Jacco lives in Nuenen, the Netherlands, with his much-loved wife and two young children. His day job is working in a crisis shelter. It's a very rewarding profession, but his career originally began completely differently; because Jacco has always loved drawing and painting. "When I had to make choices related to my studies and profession as a kid, I thought studying marketing was the sensible choice," begins Jacco. But his romantic yearning, as he calls it, to become a freelance artist grew and grew. So, after four years of studying marketing, he decided to continue his studies at art school. "For me, that was the best decision I've ever made," says Jacco. "I loved all the different crafts and disciplines, like sculpting, photography, screen printing, painting and drawing. And also, philosophy and history."
"When I visited the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, I was just fascinated and struck by the enormous amount of energy in his paintings. I decided I wanted to become the best painter that I can be."
It goes without saying that Jacco gets his inspiration from the old masters. "But sometimes a blank canvas is all the inspiration I need. Or a piece of wallpaper, or a photo, or an idea... Actually, I don't really have a particular way of coming up with a picture. I'd soon stop enjoying my work if I wasn't able to surprise myself anymore," he laughs.
So, the steps he takes when making a painting vary massively depending on the painting. "I always try to be ready for whatever comes up. So, if something pops into my head, the game begins and I can start painting. Once I'm done and I can keep looking at the image for ages and still be captivated by it, then I'm satisfied."
