Cas Slagboom was born in Vlissingen, the Netherlands. As a child, he learned the analogue photography process in his father's darkroom, an ongoing learning process, a drive to be able to manipulate technology to tell a story.
Before starting as an artist, he spent years in the wild as a mountaineer. Seeking to confront life and marvelling at its strength and survival instincts, he started drawing. The fascination with the relationship we have with nature as a complex and wondrous ecosystem arose with his never-ending curiosity and sharing his vision with others.
After many wanderings through nature, he studied Design & Fine Art at the St. Joost School of Art & Design in Breda. He then focused on visual communication, fascinated by the possibilities of interaction. As Creative Director, he seized further opportunities to specialise further with digital technical developments.
In 2002, he and his wife started Motion Works with the shared ambition to tell stories and connect people with images. They realised projects and 'social art' such as We come Closer to somehow build bridges and were focused on story and impact. As a result, Cas returned to image-making itself, almost like a painter.
Nature, and in particular our relationship with it, has always featured prominently in his magic-realist work. There is a deep-seated sense of being part of something infinitely multifaceted and grand.
