About Hans Dethmers
After a long career in law, I discovered photography 10 years ago. As a street photographer, I travelled European cities in search of what drove people. Then, as a model photographer, I penetrated their souls. Both as a judge and as a photographer, I am the involved observer who connects with his surroundings in function and in images.
This indirectness is expressed in my photographs through the use of transparent canvases, mirrors and windows. Together with my fascination with the other, they create images of imperfect beauty and melancholic longing.
The layering of the photos and the often strong use of colour create complex structures in which reality becomes unclear and extra space for emotion and essence is created. Above all, they are photographs that continue to captivate and charm through their layering, warmth and creative depth.
