I wouldn’t try to pass off a conventional artist’s CV. Without an art degree or a list of exhibitions, such a list can quickly come across as a CV with sections deliberately left blank. An artist’s biography is more effective here. It describes your perspective without attributing a career to you that you don’t actually need to claim.
Marcus Riedel, born in 1969, lives and works in northern Germany. His artistic work emerges at the boundary between external perception and inner imagery. His long-standing engagement with psychodynamic thought has sharpened his interest in how feelings, conflicts and as-yet-unspoken experiences take on a visual form, often long before they can be articulated in language.
Using watercolour, gouache and mixed media, he develops landscapes and scenes that oscillate between visible nature, dreams and the inner psychological realm. Plants, water, light, organic forms and objects that are strangely familiar do not appear as fixed symbols. They convey an atmosphere in which beauty and unease, growth and confinement, new beginnings and a sense of being lost are allowed to coexist.
There is a conceptual affinity with Carl Gustav Jung’s concept of active imagination. The painting is not fully planned and then executed. It emerges in dialogue with the material, with chance occurrences and with forms that take on a life of their own whilst painting.
