About ‘Nothing in the mirror’ by Marcus Riedel

A person stands in front of a large mirror. They lean forward slightly, as if wanting to look more closely. Yet where their reflection ought to be, there is nothing. Instead of a face, a bright expanse of blue and white opens up, almost like the sky. The mirror does not show who is standing before it. It leaves a space empty. The image explores self-image and identity. We live with ideas of who we are, how others see us and what story we tell about ourselves. Yet these certainties can become fragile. Particularly at turning points in life, a peculiar sense of alienation from one’s own self can sometimes arise. The image we have held until now no longer quite fits, whilst the new one has not yet taken shape.

The empty mirror therefore represents not only loss. It can also be an opportunity. Perhaps not every image of ourselves needs to be preserved.

The work is predominantly executed in watercolour. Dark shades of grey, black and aubergine envelop the figure and contrast with the transparent blue of the mirror. Flowing pigments, irregular transitions and the visible texture of the paper reinforce the atmosphere suspended between reality and inner space. The boldly applied frame forms a deliberate boundary. In an interior setting, the work appears calm, minimalist and yet unsettling. It is only at second glance that one realises something crucial is missing. It is precisely this void that makes the viewer themselves part of the question: what do we actually expect to see when we search for ourselves?

At Art Heroes we do not mass produce or keep stock, but make to order. Your artwork is made with passion by experienced craftsmen and is on average ready for shipment in 7 business days. Details on the exact delivery date will be sent after placement of the order. Depending on the shipping country the following delivery times apply:

Is your order a gift for someone? We can create you a gift voucher that displays the artwork(s) you ordered, so you have something to give while the artwork is being printed. Just send us an e-mail and we’ll take care of it.

How will the package be sent?

We work with several carriers, mainly UPS and DHL (Depending on the country where it is delivered, this may vary). Couriers can also be used for large or fragile packages.

Canvas are securely packed in plastic bubble wrap and cardboard. Wallpaper and posters are sent in sturdy tubes.

A courier collects the package from us and takes the package to a depot where it usually stays overnight. The day after it is collected and delivered to your home or office. We work with courier services that specialise in handling fragile parcels.

Not at home? Then the delivery driver will leave a note and an appointment can be made to schedule a new delivery.

Unfortunately, there remains a chance that something can happen during a shipment. In the unlikely event that your parcel has been damaged during transit, please take a picture of the entire item, the damage, the entire package and a picture of the shipping label. Send these photos to us by email and we will solve the problem without delay.
