About ‘Brave (beautiful?) New World’ by Marcus Riedel

Several people are standing in front of a factory’s glass façade, watching as robotic arms go about their work behind the pane. The machines grasp, sort and produce. The people remain outside. A smaller figure steps closer to the window and almost touches the glass. What at first appears to be an everyday industrial scene thus reveals a more fundamental shift. The image arose from an exploration of the future of work. Automation and artificial intelligence promise to ease the burden, boost efficiency and perhaps even free us from monotonous work. At the same time, they raise a more sensitive question. What happens to people when not only their physical strength, but increasingly also their experience, knowledge and decision-making appear to be replaceable?

In the image, the pane of glass becomes the boundary between two worlds. On the one hand, precision, productivity and technical progress; on the other, people who observe, wait and do not yet know their future place. The work neither celebrates nor condemns technology. It is precisely its ambivalence that interests me.

The painting was created predominantly in watercolour. Dark, almost monochrome areas contrast with warm industrial lighting in ochre and gold. The restrained colour palette and the strong shadows lend the scene a theatrical quality.

Viewed as a mural, the work has a graphic and architectural quality; yet, when viewed up close, it reveals its human story. It poses a question that will likely remain for some time: if the machines are working inside, what does it mean to be human outside?

At Art Heroes we do not mass produce or keep stock, but make to order. Your artwork is made with passion by experienced craftsmen and is on average ready for shipment in 7 business days. Details on the exact delivery date will be sent after placement of the order. Depending on the shipping country the following delivery times apply:

Is your order a gift for someone? We can create you a gift voucher that displays the artwork(s) you ordered, so you have something to give while the artwork is being printed. Just send us an e-mail and we’ll take care of it.

How will the package be sent?

We work with several carriers, mainly UPS and DHL (Depending on the country where it is delivered, this may vary). Couriers can also be used for large or fragile packages.

Canvas are securely packed in plastic bubble wrap and cardboard. Wallpaper and posters are sent in sturdy tubes.

A courier collects the package from us and takes the package to a depot where it usually stays overnight. The day after it is collected and delivered to your home or office. We work with courier services that specialise in handling fragile parcels.

Not at home? Then the delivery driver will leave a note and an appointment can be made to schedule a new delivery.

Unfortunately, there remains a chance that something can happen during a shipment. In the unlikely event that your parcel has been damaged during transit, please take a picture of the entire item, the damage, the entire package and a picture of the shipping label. Send these photos to us by email and we will solve the problem without delay.
