About "3 Grids"

by Patrick Mertens aka Pat Probleme

About the artwork

This black-and-white photograph shows an architectural passageway taken from a dark, framed opening that leads the eye to a brighter outdoor space. The dark edges of the passage create a strong vignette effect, putting the focus on what lies behind it.

In the foreground, immediately outside the dark opening, is a pavement of rectangular tiles, in which three round grilles with a slightly embossed pattern are visible. These grids are apparently the "3 grids" to which the file name refers.

The passage opens to a modern, concrete and glass structure. An angled ramp or slope can be seen running to the top right, bordered by a concrete wall and railing. To the left of this ramp is an open space with a stone wall and some vegetation at the base.

In the background and at the top, parts of a building are visible with many windows and horizontal slats, giving a business or institutional look. The light is diffuse, and the black-and-white conversion highlights the textures of the concrete, paving and metal elements, as well as the geometric shapes and lines of the architecture. The overall image exudes a sense of calm, order and modernity, with a focus on structure and form.
