About ‘A Bunch of Scoundrels’ by MaudBlom.com

In this acrylic painting by Nicolaas Mulerius, the sailing ship is depicted with all three sails hoisted: the jib, the foresail and the mainsail, adorned with the distinctive logo of the University of Groningen.

With its warm colours, the prominent composition centred on the canvas and the little flag at the stern, this is a stately yet gentle painting. Rugged, but not harsh. The delicate and the rugged aspects of sailing.

Since 2002, the Nicolaas Mulerius has been the sailing ship of G.S.Z. Mayday, my old sailing club from Groningen. The ship, the only floating student pub in the Netherlands, is moored in the centre of Groningen and serves as the heart of the club. It competes in regattas, is used as a training vessel for deckhands and skippers, and serves weekly as a social club for its members. In this way, it introduces young students to the sport of sailing and the ‘brown fleet’, where it is recognisable from afar by its sail emblem: the logo of the University of Groningen. By repeatedly painting, drawing, gouging and glazing this ship, I have been able to practise my techniques over the years in capturing the wind in the sails, the waves on the water, and all the details that are unique to a particular ship. That is why she means so much to me.

Elsene, Belgium

As a linguistics student in Groningen, Maud could regularly be found out on the Frisian waters, the Groningen lakes and the Wadden Sea. She also expressed this passion at home, where she painstakingly painted these seascapes and ships. When she later moved to Belgium for love, she took the plunge as a self-employed artist to pursue this passion.

As an artist, Maud specialises in painting maritime scenes featuring, amongst other things, ships, bodies of water and…
