The volcanic island of Madeira consists mainly of a mountain range running lengthwise from east to west. The most common wind directions are northeast and north and clouds are thus pushed against the north side of the mountain range. Levadas have been constructed since the 16th century to transport water from the island's humid northern coast right through the mountain range to the dry south. In the process, paths were constructed for the construction and maintenance of the levadas. Outside these paths, the wild nature is impenetrable.
