The magpie flycatcher (Ficedula westermanni) is a species of bird in the flycatcher family (Muscicapidae). It is a bird that breeds from the Himalayas to the Indian Archipelago. The species is named after Gerardus Frederik Westerman, one of the founders and first director of Artis. The magpie flycatcher is a small species of flycatcher (11 cm), with a short tail. Particularly striking in the male is the distinct, broad, white eyebrow stripe and the white wing stripe. The bird is otherwise black above and white below. The female is inconspicuously grey, but stands out for her size and she has a light brown rump and a black bill. The bird is relatively easy to observe as it has a habit of sitting still for a long time on a conspicuous branch in the forest.
