On the left are a VOC merchant, presumably Jakob Martensen, and his wife. Shown behind them is a slave holding a sunshade, a pajong, over their heads. In Javanese culture, this was a sign of status. In the background, the Castle of Batavia is visible. To the right, the return fleet of the VOC lies ready at the roadstead. As a sign of solidarity, the merchant points his stick at the ships
