A blade of grass in the evening backlight by Acharya Fotografie

A single ear of grass stands out against a calm, almost monochrome background. Nothing distracts from its form. It is only the evening sun, shining from behind, that reveals just how delicate its structure really is: countless fine awns catch the sun’s rays and stand out like golden lines against the understated surroundings. What goes almost unnoticed in passing becomes the focal point through photography. The image thrives on its simplicity. Form, light and space are enough. The large open space makes the plant appear almost detached from its surroundings. At the same time, the green stalk maintains its connection to the ground and serves as a reminder that this fragile structure is part of a living landscape.

What fascinates me most about such subjects is precisely their ordinariness. Grasses accompany us almost everywhere. We walk past them, tread on them, perceive them as part of a meadow – but rarely as individual plants. The light does not alter the subject itself; it merely alters our perception of it.

Perhaps this is one of the tasks of photography: not always to seek out the extraordinary, but to observe the seemingly ordinary until we realise that it was never ordinary to begin with.
