The daisy or mayflower (Bellis perennis) is a perennial herb in the composite family (Asteraceae), growing up to 15 cm tall.
The genus name Bellis is derived from bellus, meaning "beautiful". The species name perennis means "perennial, perennial". There are two hypotheses about the origin of the Dutch name 'daisy'. The first is a contraction of the word 'made', meaning meadow or hayfield (cf. also 'maaien'), and the word 'lief', as people probably liked to see the flower in the grass.[1] The second hypothesis indicates that the word may have come from maagde-lief, as the flower was associated with the Virgin Mary. source wikipedia
