A mill on a polder canal, known as 'In the month of July', Paul Joseph Constantin Gabriel, c. 1889
oil on canvas, h 102cm × w 66cm × d 14cm.
'Our country is coloured-sappy-fat (...) I repeat, our country is not grey, even in grey weather, the dunes are not grey either,' Constant Gabriel wrote in a letter. Unlike many painters of the Hague School, he liked to paint a beautiful summer day. This painting even features two: the grass, sky and windmill are reflected in the water.
