Lake Braies is mostly frozen over in winter. In a small ice-free part, however, the surrounding mountain peaks are reflected on the surface of the lake. It is just before sunrise. There are still no tourists at the lake and I wait for the sunrise.
Lake Braies is located a few kilometres south of Alta Pusteria between Brunico and Dobbiaco in the Braies Dolomites. The marvellous landscape offers wonderful photo opportunities throughout the day.
It is the largest and deepest natural lake in the Dolomites and lies at an altitude of 1,496 metres above sea level. The lake covers an area of approx. 31 hectares. The lake has an average depth of 17 metres and a maximum depth of 36 metres. The lake is dominated by the imposing massif of the Seekofel (2,810 m) and is the starting point of the Dolomites High Trail No. 1. Lake Braies was formed a long time ago by a mudslide. The lake is part of the Fanes-Sennes-Braies Nature Park and is a protected natural monument.
