A satyr, Jacob Jordaens (I), 1630 - 1635
According to Greek mythology, Satyrs - half man, half goat - lived in forests and mountains. In 17th century literature, a satyr belonged to the dreamed land of Arcadia, where one could live carefree. This satyr has been presented as a shepherd of goats and sheep. Here he interrupts his flute playing to look at the spectator with a smile on his face.
