The seaside resort of Scheveningen, which celebrates its 200th anniversary this year, was created with the construction of a bathhouse, where the Kurhaus can now be found. Jacob Pronk believed in the healing properties of sea water. In other countries there were already spas by the sea at that time and Jacob thought that the Netherlands could not stay behind. Furthermore, the fishing industry at that time was worse, while Scheveningen depended on it. Pronk thought he had found a new source of income. He was right. Soon more and more rich tourists came to Scheveningen to cures.
