The Delft painter Jacob Vosmaer was an early, if not pioneering specialist in painting flower pictures, often depicting rare specimens that the artists knew only from illustrated books. Some time before 1870, this panel was cut off at the sides and at the top (about nine centimetres), thus trimming the imperial crown.
Jacob Woutersz. Vosmaer was a Dutch painter from the period of the Golden Age. He is said to have started out as a landscape painter, but became known mainly for his flower still lifes.
