Lüneburg is a 1050-year-old city located between Hamburg and Hanover. The city is one of the most fascinating cities in northern Germany. The historic architecture -in the style of the brick Gothic- stands in exciting contrast to the frivolous, young city life. During World War II, Lüneburg was spared from bombing by the Allies, so the city exhibits a contiguous medieval cityscape: one of the reasons Lüneburg was once again awarded the title of Hanseatic City in October 2007.
Everywhere in the city center you will encounter the history of the city, whose most important commodity was salt. For more than a thousand years, salt was mined here in the saltworks. Thanks to the trade in the then precious "white gold", the city was rich and respected in the Middle Ages.
