About ‘A weekend with Pavel Florensky’ by Jeroen Quirijns

Painted using multiple perspectives, this depicts one of the many laid tables and looks almost as if it were a painting within a painting. It consists of a forest, sunflowers, a sea view,
a laid table and a painting on the wall. You can never take it all in at a glance, not only because of the colour palette but mainly because of the "misleidend" perspective. This approach stems from the philosophy of Pavel Florensky, the quiet genius, inventor, mathematician, philosopher, linguist, but above all a priest. Unknown to the general public yet world-famous in Russia, 1882–1937, murdered by Stalin.
In an essay, Pavel describes the principle of reverse perspective used in iconography, in a nutshell; in realism, the viewer remains a spectator; in reverse perspective, the viewer is drawn in "naar binnen", thus becoming part of the painting – which was ultimately the intention of religious paintings.
