A young student at his desk, Carel Fabritius (possibly)
In the foreground sits a young student dressed in a white shirt with a wide collar, a brown-green jacket, and a black beret. He is leaning against a table draped with an oriental rug, typical for the period, on which several books are scattered. The young man appears lost in thought. He rests his head in his right hand and supports his elbow on a closed volume, while his left hand is tucked into the waistband of his jacket. The background consists of a neutral grayish wall; a warm golden light illuminates the figure from above left, casting shadows on the forehead and eyes beneath the large hat. This creates a chiaroscuro effect, characteristic of Dutch painting of the time.
