Tropicana, once a vibrant tropical-themed swimming paradise in Rotterdam, opened in 1988 but eventually faced decline due to changing leisure preferences and high maintenance costs, closing its doors in 2010. Originally known for its tropical plants, glass dome, and exotic design, Tropicana’s novelty faded as low-cost travel options increased. Left abandoned, it fell into disrepair until 2013, when BlueCity repurposed it as a hub for sustainable businesses promoting the circular economy. Today, Tropicana’s transformation embodies Rotterdam’s embrace of sustainable innovation, evolving from a symbol of leisure to a model of urban renewal, inspiring similar projects across Europe.
