Above the Ring by Retrotimes

In *Boven de Ring*, the decisive moment of a basketball match is captured as if time has stood still for a brief instant. Two players soar towards the basket: the attacker in deep red stretches out fully for a spectacular score, whilst his opponent in dark blue gives it his all to stop him. Tension, power and movement converge at the highest point of the jump.

The setting takes us back to the pioneering years of professional basketball. Not a modern arena with LED screens and thousands of supporters, but a compact sports hall with a wooden floor, balconies and an audience sitting almost right on top of the court. The spectators’ clothing, the simple kits and the photographers along the sidelines give the scene a distinctly vintage feel. It feels like a forgotten sports photograph from a time when basketball was still raw, intimate and unpolished. The low camera angle makes the players appear monumental. Their bodies form powerful diagonal lines towards the basket, whilst the light from above illuminates the action in an almost theatrical way. As a result, a fraction of a second takes on the aura of a classic sporting epic.

‘Above the Ring’ combines nostalgia with pure athletic energy. A powerful piece for lovers of basketball, American sports culture and retro photography. Particularly suitable for a sports room, office, man cave, gym or any interior where a dynamic and characterful image can make all the difference.
