Adam Chmielowski (1845-1916), later known as Brother Albert (Brat Albert), was a Polish painter, freedom fighter and founder of a religious order. After losing his leg in the January Uprising of 1863, he turned to art and studied in Paris and Munich. His most famous work is the painting *Ecce Homo*. He later gave up painting, became a Franciscan tertiary and dedicated his life to the poor in Krakow. He founded the Albertine communities. He was canonised by Pope John Paul II in 1989.
