This picture shows a group of adelie penguins standing on a small ice floe in the ocean. They almost seem to be talking to each other, as if discussing their route with a floating iceberg in the background. The atmosphere is enhanced by the restless undulating water and the icy shades of blue stretching to the horizon. What makes this image unique is how the penguins in the foreground still attract attention. While an even larger iceberg is visible on the horizon. This makes the image vibrant and real. You are drawn into the picture by the depth created.
The inspiration for this work came during an insane
trip to Antarctica, during which the tranquillity and emptiness of the landscape touched me deeply. I loved the combination of vulnerability and resilience these animals exude. I wanted to capture that feeling: the loneliness, but also the togetherness in the middle of an overwhelming landscape.
The atmosphere I wanted to create is cool, still, almost meditative. The work invites you to breathe, to slow down. For me, it symbolises balance - between nature and animals, between strength and vulnerability. In an interior, this work can bring a sense of space and calm, especially for those who long for simplicity, nature and a touch of adventure.
