As winter begins to leave our shores and the first rays of sun warm nature, in my opinion, the most beautiful courtship ritual to be found in European birds begins. Grebes are known to dance to show their willingness to reproduce to their future partner, but before that happens, a territory needs to be secured, possible contenders need to be scared off and an impression needs to be made with the future partner. As far as I am concerned, the so-called admiral sail or cat pose is the most imposing part of this courtship ritual.
