Adolf and Catharina Croeser, known as "The Mayor of Delft and His Daughter," Jan Havicksz. Steen, 1655
Wide-legged, hand in side, Croeser sits on the sidewalk of his home on Oude Delft in Delft. His thirteen-year-old daughter Catharina is looking straight at us. Jan Steen added a story to the portrait: poor people asking the rich corn merchant for alms. Two years later, in 1657, Croeser stood surety for Steen, when the latter had high debts
