This photo shows an adult koala bear in a eucalyptus tree on Magnetic Island, off Australia's east coast near the town of Townsville. Wild koalas are found in the wild on this island. So this koala does not live in captivity, but was photographed in its natural habitat. The koalas on Magnetic Island can be seen on The Forts walking trail, which leads past numerous World War II military ruins. The koalas live in the forests surrounding these ruins, and because koalas are only awake for a few hours a day, the image of an awake koala looking ahead with open eyes is rarer than you might expect. In short, a photo with a story and not just another holiday snapshot!
