Alaska

by Vlindertuin-Art

Alaska is renowned for its rugged, complex landscapes and wide variety of natural phenomena. This poster brings together various iconic elements of this vast state in a single composition: a vast glacier flowing into the water, snow-capped mountain peaks in the background, and a moose standing on a slope covered in alpine flowers. On the water, a cruise ship sails amongst the floating ice floes, a reference to the routes that take travellers along the coastline.

The travel poster utilises a colour palette in which cool and warm tones alternate. Ice blue, turquoise and dark blue form the basis for the glacier and the sea. This is combined with the yellow of the sun, the ochre and red of the flowers, and the brown of the moose in the foreground. The graphic style is characterised by clean, geometric shapes and fluid lines, finished with a subtle texture that gives the design a vintage feel. This retro illustration draws on the graphic tradition of travel posters from the 1930s and 1940s. This was a period when railway companies, shipping lines and government schemes (such as the American WPA) were designing posters to boost interest in travelling to remote areas. Within this style, landscapes and natural areas were depicted in a stylised manner, often combined with striking typography. This design employs those same design principles in a contemporary interpretation.
