It's a perfect spring day in Orvieto, Italy, and you decide to take a walk along the promenade that surrounds this historical hilltop town. At one time, these walls were a protection against marauders and invaders, who would have to scale the sheer cliffs upon which the city rests. But today, they are a charming addition to a beautiful village, one in which the streets -- though they initially seem convoluted and confusing -- lead the visitor through and around ancient homes of stone, many decorated with festive and beautiful plants and flowers.
Looking over the stone walls, you view the agricultural land below, and there is a sense of timelessness and peace about the surroundings. And while over hundreds and hundreds of years much has changed, it is comforting to realize that much, as well, has not.
