The majestic Matterhorn - probably the most famous mountain in Europe - stretches out at an altitude of 4,478 metres in a breathtaking Alpine panorama. Switzerland's freestanding landmark is located on the border of the western Swiss canton of Valais - between Zermatt and the Italian town of Breuil-Cervinia.
Matte + Horn = Matterhorn. In fact, the name is thought to be derived from "Matte", meaning the grassy valley below the Gorner Gorge. The part where the village of Zermatt ("zur Matt") is located today. And "Horn" - this is what the local population likes to call the Matterhorn. The Italians, on the other hand, know it by the name "Monte Cervino".
The Matterhorn - the mountain of mountains. The most photographed mountain in the world. Myth and emblem for alpinists and photographers. The landmark and symbol of Switzerland.
