Positano is probably the most beautiful town on the Amalfi Coast with its romantic alleyways. The popular holiday resort is known for its colourful houses, which are built in steps on the steep slopes of the mountains. The coast near Positano is known for its dramatic cliffs and crystal-clear water, and the small village, which is around 60 kilometres from Naples and 40 kilometres from Pompeii, is home to just under 4,000 inhabitants. The former fishing village in Campania is now a popular holiday resort and one of Italy's top travel destinations.
The Amalfi Coast, known as the Costiera amalfitana or Costa d'Amalfi in Italian, is located on the west coast of Italy around 40 kilometres south of Naples. The Amalfi Coast is a good 40 kilometres of rugged and jagged coastline on the Italian Gulf of Salerno in the south of the Sorrento Peninsula. The most famous towns on the Amalfi Coast are Amalfi, Positano and Ravello. The stretch of coast between Positano and Vietri sul Mare has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997.
