The hippeastrum, also known as amaryllis, grows naturally from a bulb and has its origins in South America and the Caribbean.
The amaryllis is a bulb from the daffodil family which grows and blooms indoors. The bulb is widely available from November onwards and its large flowers bring atmosphere to your home.
Hippeastrums give you a feeling of friendship and affection. The stately long stems symbolise pride. The name Hippeastrum literally means 'knight's star', referring to the star-shaped flower petals. The amaryllis radiates charm and offers spectacular sophistication for your living room. There are many different species. The best known houseplant versions are the intense red Hippeastrum 'Floris Hekker', the 'Orange Souvereign' with a slight orange cast and the somewhat darker red 'Red Lion'.
